It offers so many nutritional benefits: high in protein, low in saturated fat and cholesterol, and contains essential fats, fiber, iron and other nutrients.</p>
<p>I had the amazing opportunity recently to make a series of videos with the <a href="http://www.soyfoods.org">Soy Foods Association</a>. I&#8217;ll update the post as soon as the videos is available on their website. In the meantime, I thought I would share some of the highlights: We did several vignettes, about 3 minutes each to cover the uses of soy for several specialty groups.</p>
<p><strong>Soy and Athletes</strong></p>
<p>Soy is especially great for athletes who train hard, because after muscles are broken down during exercise, we need protein to help build them back up. Soy is absorbed more slowly than other types of protein so some research studies suggest that soy can help maximize muscle building by extending protein absorption. <p style="text-align:left;"><strong>Why Soy is Great For Kids</strong></p>
<p>Soy is an easily digestible protein for kids with sensitive tummy&#8217;s. And, the quality of soy protein is comparable to animal proteins like fish, dairy and meat. Soy foods also contain vitamins and minerals important for bone and muscle development. You can check out the soyfoods website to <a href="http://www.soyfoods.org/consumers/recipes">find recipes </a>your kids will love.</p>
<p><strong>Can It Be Good For Seniors?</strong></p>
<p>Athletes aren&#8217;t the only ones who need strong muscles. Seniors need physical activity and protein to help maintain muscle mass and mobility throughout old age. It&#8217;s also packed with antioxidants which have been shown to be protective against some types of cancers. It&#8217;s so important to maintain a heart healthy diet as we age, and soy can be a great source of protein.</p>
<p><strong>How Can I Eat It?</strong></p>
<p>Basically soy foods can be part of a healthy plate for any age group and activity level. Following the balanced plate model, you could have a stir fry with tofu, mixed veggies and brown rice. Swap out meat for soy crumbles next time you&#8217;re having taco night. Or for lunch, a veggie burger on a wheat bun, piled with veggies and a side of fruit. Smoothies made with soy milk and frozen fruit are delicious as well.</p>
<p>When I see a food that is good for your heart, can lower your cholesterol, and is rich in protein and antioxidants, I can&#8217;t help but want to share it with others. I hope you&#8217;ll give soy a shot next time you&#8217;re looking to switch up your meal routine.</p>

<p>I never have that issue with wines I received from my <a href="http://www.cawineclub.com/" target="_blank">California Wine Club</a> Premier Membership. Sure there are wines that I like betters than others, but I’ve never been disappointed. That’s how I felt with this month’s selections from the <a href="http://www.fessparkerwines.com/" target="_blank">Fess Parker Winery</a>.</p>
<h3><font style="font-weight: bold" color="#a3ba18">Who’s Fess Parker?</font></h3>
<p>You’re probably wondering why I have a picture Davy Crockett in this post instead of something wine related. Well, it was <a href="http://www.fessparkerwines.com/Family/Fess-Parker" target="_blank">Fess Parker</a>, the founder of the Fess Parker Winery, who played Davy Crockett in the Walt Disney 1955–56 TV mini-series. To this day I remember the theme song, “Davy, Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier!” Fess also played Daniel Boone in a TV show that aired in the ‘60s.</p>
<p>Fess passed away in 2010, but his family still runs the winery along with the <a href="http://fessparkerinn.com/main/home.html" target="_blank">Fess Parker Wine Country Inn &amp; Spa</a>.</p>
<h3><font style="font-weight: bold" color="#2f86be">Falling in love with California Rieslings</font></h3>
<p>I’ve never liked Riesling because it’s too sweet. However, after a trip to Honolulu where I had an amazing California Riesling at BLT Steak, I’ve changed my mind. So when I received a bottle of Fess Parker Winery &amp; Vineyards 2010 Santa Barbara County Riesling I was hoping that lighting would strike twice. It did and now I’m hooked.</p>
<p>Fess Parker Winery &amp; Vineyards 2010 Santa Barbara County Riesling features exotic aromas and flavors of white flowers, lychee nut, lemon rind, yellow peach, passion fruit and honeydew melon. It’s extremely food-friendly and goes well with <a href="http://thismamacooks.com/fish" target="_blank">fish</a>, <a href="http://www.thismamacooks.com/tag/chicken" target="_blank">chicken</a> and lighter fare. (I had it with fish one night and an omelet the other.) It received 89 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (August 2011) and 88 points and Editor’s Choice from Wine Enthusiast (April 2012).</p>
<p>This is a wine to chill and sip on the back deck on a warm evening with friends or family. It retails for $  17.99 and <a href="http://www.cawineclub.com/Fess-Parker-Winery-%26-Vineyards-2010-Santa-Barbara-County-Riesling_PD1414.html" target="_blank">California Wine Club offers it for $  10.99</a>. It’s a wine I’d stock up on since it keeps up to three years. Maybe I’ll order a case when we move to Georgia. With two decks and a front porch, I’m planning to do a lot of my wine drinking outdoors!</p>
<h3><font color="#de6002"><font style="font-weight: bold">All aboard Parker Station</font></font></h3>
<p>After that nasty Malbec, I was looking forward to trying a wine that would restore my faith in reds. This month’s Calfornia Wine Club selection was a Fess Parker Winery &amp; Vineyards 2010 Parker Station Pinot Noir didn’t disappoint. Parker Station Pinot Noir features fragrances of cherry, strawberry, earth, forest floor, cinnamon and vanilla dance with cherry, cranberry, strawberry and vanilla flavors. I had pizza one night and seared tuna with it the next. It’s a lovely, basic Pinot Noir that’s great with food. It retails for $  26 and <a href="http://www.cawineclub.com/Fess-Parker-Winery-%26-Vineyards-2010-Parker-Station-Pinot-Noir_PD1413.html" target="_blank">California Wine Club offers it for $  12.99</a>.</p>

<p>One summer bash I’ll never forget was a coworker’s crawfish boil party. Dennis and his roommates had 100 pounds of crawfish flown into Denver from Louisiana for the party and kept it in the bathroom tub on ice along with a few lobsters a few guests had brought. Each guest was asked to bring beer and $  10 to share in costs.</p>
<p>Decorating was simple. On each newspaper draped table, there were large baguettes of French bread, butter, salt and pepper shakers, a bottle of Louisiana hot sauce, and a roll of paper towels. Once a batch was done, they would dump a mess of crawfish and corn on the tables. We’d stand around eating, pushing the used corn husks and crawfish shells to one side. Once everything was consumed, we’d gather up the newspapers, and throw the whole thing in the trash.</p>
<p>They used an outdoor propane burner to cook up the crawfish, and as the day went on the crawfish kept getting hotter and hotter due to the addition of more spices.&#160; We drank a lot of beer to cool off and had a great time.</p>

<h3><font style="font-weight: bold" color="#de6002">A campground seafood boil summer bash</font></h3>
<p>Since we spend much of our summer weekends RV camping, we do a smaller version of the crawfish boil. Instead of crawfish, we buy seafood at the grocery store on the way to the campgrounds and split the purchase with friends.</p>
<p>We usually do this on 4th of July weekend since that’s also when we celebrate my husband’s birthday. However, we did something similar with just lobster and shrimp for my mother-in-law’s birthday. <h3><font color="#a3ba18"><font style="font-weight: bold">Seafood Boil with Corn and Potatoes</font></font></h3>

<p>Serves 6</p>
<p>Prep time: 10 minutes Total time: 45 minutes</p>
<p>Ingredients:</p>
<ul>
<li>4 lemons, halved</li>
<li>6 bay leaves</li>
<li>1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoon Old Bay seasoning</li>
<li>2 large garlic heads, halved horizontally</li>
<li>6 medium onions, peeled and quartered</li>
<li>2 dried chilies</li>
<li>Coarse salt</li>
<li>16 springs fresh thyme, tied together with kitchen twine</li>
<li>1 pound clams</li>
<li>1 pound mussels

</li>
<li>2 pounds of new red potatoes, unpeeled, halved if large</li>
<li>8 ears fresh corn, shucked and broken in half</li>
<li>2 pounds tail on shrimp, uncooked (frozen is o.k.)</li>
<li>6 lobster tails, uncooked (frozen is o.k.)</li>
<li>Butter, hot sauce and French bread for serving</li>
</ul>
<p>Directions:</p>
<ol>
<li>Fill a large stockpot with 4 quarts of water. Squeeze lemons into water and add rinds.</li>
<li>Add bay leaves, seasoning, garlic, onions, chilies, 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt, and thyme.</li>
<li>Bring to boil. Reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes.</li>
<li>Add potatoes and simmer 12 minutes.</li>
<li>Add corn and simmer 5 minutes.</li>
<li>Add shrimp, lobster, clams and mussels to pot. Cover, and simmer until lobster is opaque, about 5 minutes.</li>
<li>Pour off liquid and serve out of the pot.</li>
<li>Serve with melted butter and/or hot sauce.</li>
<li>Squeeze and spread the cooked garlic on French bread.</li>
<li>Serve the corn and potatoes with butter and salt and pepper.</li>

<p>When I was in Hawaii earlier this month, my husband and I had breakfast at <a href="http://Sam Choy&rsquo;s Breakfast Lunch and Crab" target="_blank">Sam Choy’s Breakfast Lunch and Crab</a> restaurant in Honolulu. Wanting to try local fish dishes, I chose the Fresh Catch Moco, grilled mahi mahi served in a bowl with rice with shitake mushroom gravy, grilled onions and one large farm fresh egg. (It’s the fish version of the Hawaiian loco moco, which is a hamburger patty served over rice, topped with a fried egg, grilled sweet onions and brown gravy.) I loved the idea of having fish and an egg on rice for breakfast, but this would make a great dinner entrée, too.</p>
<p>While I the mushroom gravy was delicious, I felt the <a href="http://www.thismamacooks.com/recipes" target="_blank">recipe</a> needed some healthing up, <a href="http://www.thismamacooks.com" target="_blank">This Mama Cooks! On a Diet</a> style. So, instead of white rice, I chose black because it’s sweet and rather dramatic looking. (If you can’t find black rice at your supermarket or local health food store, brown rice is a good substitute.)</p>
<p>My next step was to substitute a spicy tropical fruit salsa for the gravy. I also eliminated the grilled onions to minimize the amount of fat used in the recipe. Instead, I used just a little coconut oil to coat the fish, and kept the salt to a minimum. I kept the whole egg, but using egg whites would be a healthier option.</p>
<p>Finally, a note on the fish. I used cabrilla (the Mexican name for grouper or sea bass) that was given to me by a friend after his recent Mexican fishing trip. You can use any white, mild fish that grills well like snapper, mahi mahi, or tilapia.</p>

<p>This is me.</p>

<p>Today. And all week.</p>
<p>Being back in the office is fun but it&#8217;s a whole different lifestyle than living in New Zealand and working from home. There is definitely a lot more sitting. When I&#8217;m at home I&#8217;m usually standing to work a lot more than I do here since we are in an open office work environment and it&#8217;s just a bit weird.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m trying to stay healthy despite my increase amount of sitting.</p>
<ul>
<li>I&#8217;m drinking more water. See that bottle in the photo? It&#8217;s big and I drink a couple of those a day.</li>
<li>We walk at lunch. It is awesome to have a couple coworkers who like getting out of the office for a short stroll.</li>
<li>I&#8217;ve brought my lunch multiple days! Saving money and being healthy all at the same time. Win.</li>
</ul>
<p>I&#8217;ve also been crazy busy at work.  That means doing the normal things like writing <a href="http://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/blog/socialmadness/2012/05/which-social-media-platform-is-right.html">articles about social media</a> and the more fun things like playing with our office dog.</p>

<p>That&#8217;s Sophie! She is the cute little furbaby of a coworker. She is spending the morning at the office and it&#8217;s so fun to watch her run around. She makes me miss JuJu even more!</p>
<p>Back to work for me now. I&#8217;ll be back at some point soon to share about the food truck rally that happened in Memphis yesterday at lunch. I love food trucks so the fact that Memphis has a food truck scene now makes me super happy. Post coming soon, I promise!</p>

Become a fan www.facebook.com Aerobic exercise such as walking, riding a stationary bike, or running is a good way to accelerate the fat burning process, as long as it is not overdone and as long as it is used only in addition to a good weight training program. It should never be used as a substitute for weight training since it does not permanently increases your metabolism and since it does not has the ability to re-shape your body. Fat Burning Zone In order for aerobic exercise to be effective, it needs to be performed within the fat burning zone. The fat burning zone is the zone at which you are doing enough work to burn fat. Your pulse (how fast your heart is beating per minute) determines this zone. The fat burning zone formula is the following: Fat burning zone=220-(Your Age) x (.75) The result of your formula will give you an approximate value of how fast your heart should be beating per minute. For example, a 20-year-old would need to reach a pulse in the neighborhood of 150 beats per minute in order to be in the fat burning zone. It is important to remember that this is not an absolute figure, this is an approximation. So as long as you are plus or minus 10 beats from the number that the formula provides you with, then you can rest assured that you will be burning fat. You will do one set for the left leg, one set for the right leg, and back to the left leg. You will continue this back to back format until all 6 sets are done. 3) Train your calves on Leg days along with your quadriceps and your hamstrings. <p>TODAY WAS A GOOD DAY PEOPLE.</p>
<p>Seriously. I feel pretty good about things.</p>
<p>What things? Let me tell you.</p>
<p><strong>I&#8217;m back on track.</strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong><img title="bwtoday.jpg" src="http://amerrylife.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/bwtoday.jpg" border="0" alt="bw today  " width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>After finishing LiveFit then freaking out over my mom&#8217;s cancer then moving back to the USA I let myself completely derail from the healthy living thing. I wasn&#8217;t out there eating twinkies and chugging soda, but I wasn&#8217;t paying attention to my food and I wasn&#8217;t exercising much at all.</p>
<p>Frankly I felt awful last week because of it. A few weeks of that made me feel just AWFUL.</p>
<p>I can only go so far off track these days before my body screams at me to stop it and treat it better. Better food, more movement, more positive thinking. Those things are the important things to me and make me feel better. It&#8217;s important for me to feel good, to feel strong, to feel capable. So I&#8217;m shaking off the last few weeks and getting back on track.</p>
<p>That means:</p>
<ul>
<li>Taking my lunch to work most days. (Started today!)</li>
<li>Going for a walk before/after work and during lunch. (Also did today!)</li>
<li>Tracking what I&#8217;m eating in some way. (Back to MyFitnessPal counting today!)</li>
<li>Forcing my thoughts to the positive. (Harder, but I&#8217;ve tried today to banish the downer vibes!) </li>
</ul>
<p>It&#8217;s pretty damn annoying to go through this process so many times (and probably more annoying to read for those faithful reader who want to shake me sometimes). You know&#8230; I get to my healthiest point and then for whatever reason slide into less than healthy behaviors. Here&#8217;s to hoping one day this isn&#8217;t something I do anymore.</p>
<p>But for now I&#8217;ll deal with the reality of the situation. Taking it one day at a time. Small healthy behaviors lead to bigger changes, right?</p>
<p>Go team Merry Life. (Maybe we need to work on the team name, hehe. Suggestions welcome.)</p>

<p>There&#8217;s a lot of stuff happening in my life right now that I&#8217;m not talking about and might not for a while.</p>
<p>Doesn&#8217;t matter though&#8230;  I feel good about the things that are happening behind the scenes. Life is good.</p>

<h3><font style="font-weight: bold" color="#a3ba18">Coffee Granita</font></h3>
<p><em>By Chef Michael Symon of The Chew</em></p>
<p>Ingredients:</p>
<ul>
<li>1 pot of coffee</li>
<li>Sugar or no calorie sweetener (to taste)</li>
</ul>
<p>Directions:</p>
<ol>
<li>Brew a pot of coffee.</li>
<li>Add sugar or sweetener into a medium bowl. Mix until sugar or sweetener dissolves.</li>
<li>Place coffee and sugar mixture into a large baking dishing and cover with plastic wrap. Put it in the freezer.</li>
<li>After 45 minutes, scrape mixture with a fork. Repeat every 45 minutes for the first two hours.</li>
<li>Freeze overnight and scrape it again just before serving.&#160;</li>
<li>In a tall glass, place a few scoops of granita and top with some whipped cream or topping.</li>
<li>Serve with biscotti and enjoy!</li>
