<p>I think I wear the same shirt to the gym every Monday.</p>
<p>I must because I always take a photo on Mondays and it&#8217;s always in the same shirt. I stole this tshirt from my little brother once and after I wore it he wouldn&#8217;t take it back so it became mine. It&#8217;s from his homeschool baseball team and it&#8217;s the perfect color and feel. It&#8217;s my favorite shirt to workout in because it&#8217;s not too heavy.</p>
<p>Unfortunately though it&#8217;s almost too big and I could probably downsize to smaller size soon. I&#8217;m reluctant because I love it but it&#8217;s probably time since I do a lot of pulling and tugging on the extra fabric at the gym. <p>It&#8217;s the last two weeks of the muscle building phase. Weeks 7-8 feature hard workouts with lots of exercises with 4 sets of 8 reps.</p>
<p>i ended up not being able to do shoulders because I was at home icing my ankle so I added most of the shoulder workout to legs (day 47). That meant I did half a shoulder workout then a back workout the next day. It made it super tough and I was super sore for the last couple days. I won&#8217;t be doing the back to back workouts again like I did with my shoulders/back this week. I wanted to keep Sunday as my rest day but I&#8217;m not sure the muscle soreness was worth it.</p>
<p>For cardio I&#8217;ve been doing a mix of elliptical, bike, and walking to get the 30 minutes done. Cardio at the gym is mega boring so switching it up helps me not go crazy. Also listening to Jillian Michaels podcasts helps. A couple days I did more than 30 minutes cardio because I went back to the gym with Kepa and had more time than needed so I ended up in the 40-50 minute range for cadio.</p>
<h2 style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande';">LiveFit Trainer Week 7 Thoughts:</h2>
<p>This week was great. I enjoyed the workouts despite the slight injury to my ankle. I can&#8217;t believe I&#8217;m so clumsy I twisted my ankle on an abs exercise! Oh well, it felt better after a little rest and ice so I&#8217;m back to the workouts.</p>
<p>Today I asked one of the regulars about his shoes because they were crazy colorful and I <em>wanted</em> them bad. If I had the clothes and shoes to walk into the gym looking like a mismatched neon rainbow I probably would, so his shoes appealed to me. I asked him where he got them and we ended up talking a bit including a compliment about how it looks like I&#8217;ve been working really hard. That made my day because I feel like I&#8217;ve proved myself and earned the respect of the gym regulars (not that it&#8217;s needed but it&#8217;s nice).</p>
<p>Plus I now know where to buy some awesome new shoes once I save up the cash. I&#8217;ll add that to the list along with new shirts (colorful ones of course).</p>
<p>I sneaked a peak at the workouts after next week and I&#8217;m both scared and excited. It adds in intervals with cardio (HIIT), plyometrics, circuit training and lower weights with higher reps. I still have one more week until I get to that but I can&#8217;t help but want to skip ahead and get to the losing fat part of this program. Just one more week! Exciting!</p>

<h3><strong><font color="#a3ba18">Yummy Strawberry Yogurt Popsicles</font></strong></h3>
<p>Ingredients For Fun:</p>
<ul>
<li>2 cups strawberries cut up into pieces</li>
<li>2 cups low fat vanilla yogurt</li>
<li>paper cups (approximately 12)</li>
<li>wooden sticks (approximately 12)</li>
</ul>
<p>How To Make It:</p>
<ol>
<li>Combine strawberries and yogurt. Mix well.</li>
<li>Fill cups with mixture.</li>
<li>Cover cups with aluminum foil. Insert stick into each cup.</li>
<li>Freeze popsicles until they’re firm.</li>
</ol>

I have to say I was ridiculously excited to hear thunder and see lightning.<strong> I LOVE STORMS.</strong> Despite my hatred for tornadoes, I still love a good storm. In Tennessee I would always sit on the porch for as long as I could until the weather was too bad or I had something to do. Today reminds me a lot of home.</p>
<p>I love the little glimpses of life that remind me of home but generally living here is nothing like living in Tennessee. This isn&#8217;t a bad thing.</p>
<p>Prime example of this: I can go to the beach whenever I want.</p>

<p><strong>I love being 30 minutes from the nearest beach.</strong> LOVE IT. When I need a pick me up I can just drive over to the beach and walk on the sand and listen to the ocean. I love the ocean smell and just the ocean in general so I&#8217;m happy that I now live a lot closer now. Major perk of life on the island that I took advantage of last night around sunset.</p>

<p>At the rate I&#8217;m drinking it I need to find more coffee mugs since I only have one currently. I don&#8217;t know why but the other day I really wanted green tea and I&#8217;ve been drinking several cups a day since then.<strong> I love green tea </strong>right now so we will see how long it lasts.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m currently sipping away at my tea between workout sessions. I&#8217;m going twice a day currently because I like doing my strength training earlier in the day when the gym isn&#8217;t busy. Then when Kepa comes home from work and heads to the gym I join him but hit the cardio section. It works pretty well because I feel like I&#8217;m not spending hours at the gym at once (boring) but I&#8217;m still getting everything I need to do done for the day.</p>
<p>This post started out just because I wanted to talk about storms but it ended up being about the things I&#8217;m loving right now. I feel so happy and refreshed after writing this post so I might have to do something similar more often. Focusing on the positive and what I am loving in the moment feels good! Hope you enjoy it a little bit too!</p>

Learning to understand the kinds of stress, the possible impact it has on your heart and overall health, as well as ways to manage stress, will go a long way in keeping your heart, and you, as healthy as possible.</p>
<h2>The Good, the Bad and the Too Much Stress</h2>
<p>Life is full of stress and that&#8217;s not such a bad thing. In fact, that jittery excitement we get when going for a job interview or that scared but powerful feeling when we narrowly avoid getting into a car accident, is actually good for us.</p>
<p>	Sudden, acute stress causes our hearts to beat faster, our senses to sharpen and readies our bodies for action. It causes our body to release a burst of hormones known as the <a href="http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/life/human-biology/fear2.htm">flight or fight response</a> that help us perform physical and mental tasks more efficiently. For that moment we all become the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Six_Million_Dollar_Man#Opening_sequence">Six Million Dollar Man</a>: better…stronger…faster. This type of stress can actually <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15818153/ns/health-mental_health/t/can-stress-actually-be-good-you/#.TzrvrZipo1c">improve heart function</a>.</p>
<p>	The problem occurs when we are exposed to constant, chronic stress. Stress that lingers for weeks, months or longer, such as family tension, job pressures and the like. This type of stress results in elevated hormone levels and can then result in <a href="http://www.everydayhealth.com/hypertension/understanding.aspx">high blood pressure</a>, <a href="http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/10/071015131515.htm">depression</a> and ultimately<a href="http://www.cdc.gov/heartdisease/facts.htm"> heart disease</a>.</p>
<h2>Recognizing the Signs of Stress Overload</h2>
<p>So how do you know if you’re overstressed? The answer is, if you have to ask, you’re not. But knowing you are overstressed and understanding the toll the stress is taking on your body is completely different. Do any of these sound familiar? Do too many of them? Then it’s time to take action!</p>

	consistent effort. Some tips for keeping your stress levels in check include:</p>

	Set realistic expectations</h5>
<p>Realize that you can&#8217;t do everything and that sometimes <a href="http://www.forbes.com/2010/05/27/say-no-work-leadership-careers-responsibility.html">you just have to say no</a>. And that&#8217;s ok. You don&#8217;t have to refuse everything, just be selective about the tasks you take on. Set yourself up for success, not failure (and more stress).</p>

	Prioritize</h5>
<p>Some projects are just too overwhelming to consider whole. So instead, <a href="http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newHTE_92.htm">prioritize and break it down</a> into smaller, more doable tasks. Each time you accomplish a task, acknowledge your success before you move on to tackle the next.</p>

	Relax</h5>
<p>Sure, it&#8217;s often easier said than done. Being able to truly relax, for a truly overstressed person can be quite daunting. <a href="http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=46268">Meditation</a> and breathing exercises may work for some people. Perhaps taking a hot bath or going for a long walk are what relaxes you. <a href="http://diettogo.com/blog/have-nice-day-2-minute-stress-busters">Experiment to see what works</a> for you and then make a concerted effort to include these activities into your life. </p>

	Volunteer</h5>
<p><a href="http://www.healthreviser.com/content/why-volunteering-lowers-stress-levels">Volunteering and doing for others</a> is a great way to get your mind off your own problems. It allows you to temporarily forget about your stresses and can even promote a sense of gratitude so that the things that were stressing you out may seem less important. </p>

	Get enough sleep</h5>
<p>When we are stressed out, our sleep is often affected. Our mind is racing and the prospect of getting a good, restful night&#8217;s sleep seems out of reach. But this is when we need adequate sleep most. Sleep is our body&#8217;s <a href="http://diettogo.com/blog/sleep-and-our-weight">way of regrouping and recharging</a>. Being <a href="http://www.diy-stress-relief.com/effects-of-lack-of-sleep.html">stressed and tired can be a lethal</a> combination. </p>

The children that I met this morning were certainly excited to learn and were a fun, outgoing group to teach!</p>

<p>We brought <a href="http://www.choosemyplate.gov/">MyPlate</a> to life with an interactive game and an engaging lesson in nutrition. We used our imaginations and helped Andy the Astronaut fly back home to Planet Power, once his plate was balanced so he had enough energy for the trip home! I gave the children an association word for each food group on MyPlate: fruit/energy, vegetables/vitamins, protein/muscles, grains/brains and dairy/strong bones. The children interacted by making gestures (such as making their muscles flex or pretending to peel a banana) and screaming the words out &#8211; and seemed to be having a lot of fun! After 5 volunteers picked their favorite food from a specific food group, they handed the food to Andy and watched as his engine fueled up. Finally, it was time for blastoff, and the children helped Andy successfully land on Planet Power.</p>

<p>MyPlate is a great resource, and is more helpful than its predecessor, MyPyramid. The guidelines are clear and easy to understand and apply, such as making half your plate fruits and veggies. Also, the focus on balance and variety, which are key concepts in nutrition. The new guidelines, along with the clear visual, are also kid-friendly so it is easy for your children to understand the basic elements of proper nutrition. The MyPlate logo depicts an applicable visual for anybody to picture their plate and ideal servings of food groups. I think this is a great resource to use in order to plan or track meals &#8211; and the MyPlate website offers a ton of cool benefits for free! <p>For this month’s <a href="http://www.thismamacooks.com/tag/secret-recipe-club" target="_blank">Secret Recipe Club</a> assignment, I was partnered with Jayasri of <a title="http://samayalarai-cookingisdivine" href="http://samayalarai-cookingisdivine" target="_blank">Samayalarai – Cooking is Divine</a>. Jayasri&#8217;s Indian and lives in the UK, and likes to cook up traditional dishes as well as try out Western ones. I had a tough time choosing a <a href="http://www.thismamacooks.com/recipes" target="_blank">recipe</a> because I wanted to cook up an Indian dish but didn’t want to use ingredients that would be hard for my readers to find. I also wanted to make something that was healthy and her recipe for <a href="http://samayalarai-cookingisdivine.blogspot.com/2010/09/mango-quinoa-halwa-in-microwave.html" target="_blank">Mango &#8211; Quinoa Halwa in Microwave</a> seemed to be a good choice on both counts.</p>
<p>Halwa is a sweet Indian dish. It’s usually made with lots of ghee (clarified butter) and can be made with carrots, banana, or semolina boiled with milk, almonds, sugar, and cardamom. Jayasri’s recipe used <a href="http://www.thismamacooks.com/tag/quinoa" target="_blank">quinoa</a>, which is full of healthy, vegetarian protein and is naturally <a href="http://www.thismamacooks.com/gluten-free" target="_blank">gluten free</a>. </p>
<p>However, I was puzzled by her microwave directions. Obviously, UK and US microwaves are very different! I decided to make my version on the stove top. I also wanted to health things up by using coconut oil for ghee and coconut milk for cow’s milk, which turned the recipe into a <a href="http://www.thismamacooks.com/tag/vegan" target="_blank">vegan</a> dish. I eliminated calories by using <a href="http://www.thismamacooks.com/tag/stevia" target="_blank">stevia</a> instead of sugar, and didn’t include almonds because of my daughter, Lucie’s nut allergies.</p>
<p>When I was researching halwa dishes, I noticed that Mythreyee of <a href="http://www.paajaka.com/">Paajaka Recipes</a> used saffron in her <a href="http://www.paajaka.com/2009/01/microwave-mango-halwa.html">Microwave Mango Halwa</a>. Since I had a little bottle in the cupboard, I decided to use that, too.</p>

<li class="ingredient"><span class="amount">1 cup</span> <span class="name">mango pulp (2 mangoes), pureed</span></li>
<li class="ingredient"><span class="amount">1 cup</span> <span class="name">quinoa, cooked</span></li>
<li class="ingredient"><span class="amount">4 tablespoons</span> <span class="name">light coconut milk</span></li>
<li class="ingredient"><span class="amount">3/4 cup</span> <span class="name">Stevia in the Raw</span></li>
<li class="ingredient"><span class="amount">1/4 teaspoon </span> <span class="name">cardamom</span></li>
<li class="ingredient"><span class="amount">3-4 </span> <span class="name">saffron threads (optional)</span></li>
<li class="ingredient"><span class="amount">1/4 cup</span> <span class="name">coconut oil</span></li>
<li class="ingredient"><span class="amount">1/4 cup </span> <span class="name">raisins</span></li>

<h4>Directions</h4>

<ol>
<li class="instruction">Cook quinoa according to package directions.</li>
<li class="instruction">Cut and peel the mangos and remove the pulp. Puree in a small food processor or blender.</li>
<li class="instruction">Place pureed mango, cooked quinoa, coconut milk, stevia, cardamom and saffron (if using) in a medium sized sauce pan over medium heat. Stir to blend.</li>
<li class="instruction">Cook over medium heat, occasionally stirring, until mixture starts to bubble.</li>
<li class="instruction">Add the coconut oil. Stir to combine.</li>
<li class="instruction">Continue to cook over medium heat until mixture starts to thicken. This should take 10 to 12 minutes. The halwa should be thick like oatmeal and glossy from the coconut oil.</li>
<li class="instruction">Add raisins and stir until evenly distributed and heated through.</li>
<li class="instruction">Dish warm halwa into small bowls and serve immediately.</li>

<p>My &#8220;holiday&#8221; today wasn&#8217;t that exciting. It was actually like almost any other day:</p>

<p>I read in <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-02-07/wal-mart-to-reduce-sugar-fat-salt-in-some-private-label-foods.html" target="_blank">Bloomberg magazine</a> that Walmart is reducing the fat, sugar and sodium in some of its private-label foods and they’ll be marketing more healthy grocery items starting in April. I’ve already seen these changes in my local super Walmart. For example, the price of whole wheat pasta is the same as regular pasta. They also have a terrific <a href="http://www.thismamacooks.com/gluten-free" target="_blank">gluten free</a> section and carry organic vegetables and fruits and tofu. It’s not a health food store by any means, but they’re offering more healthy choices at good prices.</p>
<p>So it’s no surprise that Walmart and the Walmart Foundation just announced a <a href="http://app.socialspark.com/clicks?lid=21081&amp;oid=7239479" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">healthy living</a> initiative and are giving more than $  9.5 million in grants to national organizations that are helping families to have healthy, nutritional eating habits. The money will support nutrition education programs, provide classes focused on learning how to cook and shop for healthier foods on a budget, and provide live cooking demonstrations in communities nationwide.</p>

<h3><strong><font color="#de6002">Share Our Strength and make a change in our community</font></strong></h3>
<p>I’m happy to see that one of the organizations Walmart is giving money to is <a href="http://www.strength.org/" target="_blank">Share Our Strength</a>, a charity that I’ve supported here at This Mama Cooks! On a Diet. Walmart is giving them $  4 million to provide grocery store tours to 7,500 participants through <em>Shopping Matters</em> which helps low-income families learn how to shop healthy on a budget. In addition, 31,000 participants will be reached through <em>Cooking Matters</em>, a six-week course on how to cook healthier meals on a budget.</p>

<p>Even here in slim and healthy Colorado I see huge lines at fast food restaurants and people who load up their shopping carts with processed foods. I truly believe that if you show people how easy and affordable it is to cook in a healthy way, they’ll try to make changes and lead a healthier lifestyle.</p>
<h3><font color="#2f89be"><strong>Teaming up with an expert</strong></font></h3>
<p>Walmart is also working with award-winning nutritionist and author, <u><a href="http://www.everythingro.com/bio.html" target="_blank">Rovenia M. Brock Ph. D.</a></u> who is known for her unique brand of inspiration, nutrition education, and health advice. Like me, she believes that if you educate people on healthy eating, it’ll help them make positive changes in their lives.</p>
<p>“Nutrition education plays a vital role in helping families break bad health habits‚ from eating comfort foods to resisting exercise,” said Dr. Ro “As we tackle the issue of obesity in this country, every family must take a step back and look at what they are putting on the table for their children. Eating better today can help reduce the likelihood that your child will suffer from chronic health problems later in life.&quot;</p>
<h3><strong><font color="#c62f33">Making changes in my household</font></strong></h3>
<p>At my home, we already eat healthfully, and have many grocery and health food stores nearby to support our healthy food choices. However, I still go to Walmart to check out their workout videos, <a href="http://www.thismamacooks.com/exercise" target="_blank">exercise</a> equipment, and workout clothes. Plus, Walmart is the closest store to me that carries my favorite gluten free brown rice cereal. So when I do a cereal run, I also stock up on other healthy food since Walmart prices can’t be beat. I’ll be looking forward to seeing more of my favorite healthy brands and more organic produce there in the future</p>
